Trip to the USPS

Trip to your local post office is simple + free and apparently very entertaining for lil toddlers.

Bubu witnessed and understood the cycle of the postal service.

This christmas, we got a few metal vehicles to replace the large collection of plastic ones(mostly gifts). We are trying to eliminate plastic as much as possible. All of the vehicles we got are the ones he see's here in the US around him. Having locally visible vehicles has really sparked a lot of fun to his play. He has been very excited to spot all these on the road or in our neighborhood. One such vehicle is the USPS van.

One day I was dropping a package early in the morning at USPS, and this office had their van parking area right on its side visible to the public. There was an environment of hustle-bustle to get all the letters into the van, to be delivered that day. That's when it struck me, it was perfect for a field trip for Bubu to see the Postal service in action.

So that Saturday we went to the post office at 9:15 am. We dropped off one package, that meant we got to stand in line and actually interact with a person on the counter. Then we went to the side USPS van parking area. The mail men had huge square trolleys. They wheeled it to their vans and loaded stacks of boxes into the van. And each van took off as they finished loading. Bubu witnessed and understood the cycle of dropping the mail and in turn it going out through the vans to the next destination.

We hung around the office for some time. We got lucky and saw someone do self check-out of their letter and package.

We also looked at the drop-off blue mail boxes on the road side. Now Bubu spots them on the road when we are driving.

When we got home, guess what a USPS van was parked right next to our home. Bubu got to see how he was dropping off the letters and packages into the home mailbox's from the larger cargo boxes we had seen earlier that were loaded into the van by the mailmen.

It was such a simple activity and free and apparently very entertaining. Bubu still asks to got to the USPS on certain weekends.

We also got some books on mail-service from the library. We loved reading them.
