Trees!

Updated: May 12, 2021

Some activities we did to enhance Bubu's interest in trees!

A few activities so Bubu could enjoy, indulge and grow his interest about trees.

Lately Bubu has been noticing the colorful fall leaves. That has lead him to observe and be fascinated by trees around us. I wanted to do a few activities around trees so he could enjoy, indulge and grow his interest in nature or trees to be specific.

#1 Library

We borrowed some books from the library. National geographic has some informative books for little kids. They have photographs which makes it easier to identify. We also borrowed a few illustrated books. Here is our stash of Library finds:-

#2 Artwork

Bubu really wanted to share his favorite tree's from the neighborhood with his school friends. Sharing a tree was obviously not possible :) We brainstormed and he came up with the idea of sharing the parts of the tree instead. We made an artwork to share during 'Show-&-Tell' at school.

Bubu narrowed down on two trees; eucalyptus tree and sweetgum tree. It was a fun walk/field trip to the neighborhood collecting all the parts:- leaves, twigs, fruit. As always to make this artwork, you will need only a few things, most of them found at home and will be done in few minutes.

Let's make it

You will need

  1. Card sheet/cardboard: for base

  2. Parts of a tree - fruit, leaves, twig, bark, flowers

  3. Tape

  4. Glue

  5. Marker/pen

Process

  • Go for a field trip to find all the parts of a tree. Get 2 - 3 of the same (part). Bubu had a huge meltdown when one of the dried leaves crumbled before pasting. To avoid meltdowns having extras is a blessing.

  • Use card sheet, paper or cardboard as a base. Paste using tape, glue or hot glue depending on the object.

  • Help label all the different parts with a marker

  • Thats it. Looks so pretty and ready in 5 minutes.

  • Tip: Bubu had this idea of taking the artwork in the sunlight and see the different shadows it creates. Which I thought was very apt for this project, considering they are all 3D objects. He showed the shadows to his classroom too.

Bubu was so happy to share with his friends his favorite trees from our neighborhood.

#3 Games

Bubu came up with this game, anytime we go for a drive or for a walk he will spot the trees, point and call out the name. He will encourage us to participate in this game too.

I am sure we can come up with many more such games.

#4 Capture

We recently got Bubu a kids digital camera. Couple days a week on your daily walks, Bubu takes his camera along and clicks pictures of trees and things he likes on the way. Its a side activity but its a cute one.

I feel our Bubu is throughly enjoying his tree obsessions.
