I do have a meetup which is divided into 3 topics: Nature, Fun learning world Concepts, Recycle + Reuse = Sustainability. One weekend is dedicated to each topic.
Today as parents we really need to think what values we pass down to our kids to make them more conscious citizens of the world tomorrow. One such value that needs to be inculcated since childhood is preserving our environment. With the increase in population, pollution, materialism and misuse of technology its now become a necessity to educate our future generation, various ways to maintain and save the environment. One way of protecting our environment can be by observing the three ‘R’s’ namely Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
I club two 'R' REUSE and 'RECYCLE' together to inspire ideas for my Meetup, which is conducted once a month.
It's no fun to just lecture kids on this topic, so my solution is to make it a fun activity.
So I concentrate on reusing things by employing creative ways, & recycle the used thing to convert them into other products. I initiate a fun DIY project that the kids can appreciate. Mostly these items are kid-user-based like a toy, etc. That way it shows them a practical way how the trash/item now has a second life and how they as a kid are benefiting from the same. It gives the child a new perspective to look at waste enabling them to creatively come up with solutions and ideas to reuse. It also inculcates the roots of imagination, creativity, sustainability and to an extent minimalist living which will help mother earth.
Stay tuned for DIY's from these meetup's which I will upload as future blog posts.
On a side-note how we incorporate the first 'R' REDUCE.
We have gradually adopted and still learning ways to reduce the quantity of waste we generate. Now, we are actively aware and conscious of how much stuff comes into the house. We make conscious decisions on how the product adds value in our life, stirring clear from just because its cute. Concentrating more on 'need a product' verses 'want a product'. Second thing to consider is realistically how often will we use it. Example, a printer we take printouts once a year or never, it makes sense to get it done in Fedex whenever need be. Buy in bulk instead of individually wrapped items. Refrain from using bottled water instead carry our own bottle. Use actual cutlery for parties instead of paper/plastic/styrofoam dinnerware. Use reusable shopping bags (now a California state law too).
