Sensory bins

Updated: Oct 11, 2019

Support's messy and sensory play, and yet easy to clean up and manage sensory bin ideas.

I definitely need to give this a better thought and use more easy to clean up materials, until he is a little older.

After coming across sensory table/bin as a form of play I was very excited to introduce the same to my lil Bubu.

I vividly remember, the first one I put together, Bubu was only 12 months of age. I had filled the bin with broken wheat, as it looks and feels close to sand and of lesser concern if put in mouth. In matter of 10 minutes, all my excitement had turned in a big puddle on the floor. If you remember my play room blogpost, that means it all got into the grass carpet we have. As I was cleaning the mess up I was thinking of how I definitely need to give this a better thought and use more easy to clean up materials, until he is a little older. The key is the materials need to be big enough, so you can roundup anything or everything that gets on to the floor and dump it back in the bin after the play is over; cutting down your cleanup time, process, frustrations.

Sensory bin essentials

To make this fun and engaging enough, you will need some basic things, like a bin/box/table for pouring in the sensory material into. Some spoons, jugs, funnels, bowls, or take it a step further into minimalism and use your sandbox toys/bath toys so they will serve a dual purpose in life.

Edible materials

My Bubu is 2 years 2 months old now and he does not put a whole lot of toys in his mouth but for most of the last year he did. This was the best time to introduce edible materials in the sensory bin. For example: popcorn, puffed grains like rice, wheat, barley, jowar, etc, cereal like unsweetened corn flakes, cheerios, etc. You have to still be in the same room to keep an eye on choking if ever but you can continue to work on your laptop or so. Remember the one-rule the bigger the easier to clean up.

Craft materials

Borrow from your crafting cabinet, some materials that are super easy to pick up. Cut-up felt, pom-pom balls, packing peanuts, cut-up satin ribbon, shredded documents, get creative just do not forget it needs to be just big enough to round up easily.

These are some of the things I use so life is easy for me and fun for Bubu. What are the materials that you use in your sensory bin?
