Halloween costume - Bat

New year, a new DIY costume. This year I kept it simple and quick. In fact almost no sew.

I am a Interaction designer by profession, so DIY comes naturally to me. For me handmade aka DIY is very therapeutic. If you ask me the joy of flaunting my creation cannot be measured to a store bought one. So yet again this year I set out to make a Halloween costume for my Bubu.

He is now 2.5 years old like any normal toddler at this age he needs a lot emotional involvement from me, which makes me tired.

I kept it easy literally something I put together in 2 hours not like last year (18 hrs).

The base of design remain the same like last year; make the design such that it can be used for pretend play, budget-friendly, and warm.

  • I want my DIY to be utilized to its fullest. This year too I am making a cape. This cape is one size fits all Bubu can use it for pretend play in the future. I believe in taking the effort to think dual-use or long-term-use.

  • That way it will be budget friendly too.

  • As it's cold during nights around Halloween the felt cape will keep Bubu warm. And if wanted I can dress him in more layers underneath as it will not be visible.

Btw this costume costed only $5 including all the material. And it cost me only 2 hours of sleep (still priceless :)

You can use this DIY to make any kind of bird you want!

Let's make it:

You will need

  1. Quilted cloth (black)

  2. Scissors

  3. Thread

  4. Needle

  5. Winter hat (black)

  6. Hot glue gun

  7. Glue sticks

  8. Googly eyes

The Process

  • I had this black quilted cloth left over from another project. It was pre cut to 1/4 yard, that meant I could not have control on how tall I wanted it. So I cut 2 semi circles and stitched it using buttonhole stitch at the shoulders. Give it a slit on top or cut it all the way down, if you use this method as it needs that space for your Bubu's head to easily slip through.

  • If you are buying a new material I recommend measure your child's tee-shirt length or longer whatever suits your fancy. Use my last years macaw halloween tutorial to cut a circle cape and save yourself 1 hour to hand stitch the semi-circles like I did here.

  • Cut smaller curves on both sides, to make it look like a Bat's webbed wings.

  • Now lets prep the winter hat. I cut two identical ears. Stitched it on again with buttonhole stitch. You can stick them with hot glue gun if you don't want to sew.

  • Last but not the least stuck googly eyes with hot glue gun.

  • Ta-da your costume is ready.

Dress your Bubu in as many layers as you want. I had my Bubu wear one tee shirt, topped with a thick sweater. Topped that with a black long sleeve tee shirt. Followed by the Bat cape. Bottoms was a thick grey pant and on the head was the winter hat with Bat face.

I wore the tree costume from last year. I didn't have anything brown so I wore the darkest colors possible and a borrowed heavy-leather-jacket from my husband which was brown.

This year we went trick-or-treating for the first time. It was a lot of fun, we both enjoyed it. We did about 4-6 homes but it was enough for our littles to be tired and go to sleep peacefully at night.
