Our many adventures into space.
It all started with a moon!
Bubu now is very verbal and can express himself better. It is more easy for me to know what he likes, rather than relying only on his body language. Recently he had been observing the moon a lot. Here are some activities we did in the last few weeks.
#1 Library
First step was to get some books on moon. Most of them were fictional stories.
One week in a happy accident, I picked a book that turned out to be based on facts about moon and space. When we read it for the first time I felt it is too heavy but kept reading and explained in simple words in our mother tongue + english what it said, as I read each page. To my surprise Bubu loved it. He wanted to read that book everyday several times. He also wanted to get the next two books in the series on Sun and Earth.
Which we did. I reserved the Earth, Sun books and after reading those he was ready and asking books on other topics/concepts like solar system, continents etc. So we got books like my first atlas, solar system, images of space by NASA.
#2 Flashcards
I also got him flash cards on space, countries and their flags as they support the space and earth subject very well. This helped support his curiosity and gave exposure to all the different objects in space he cannot see by staring at the sky. As well as the vague concept like countries.
#3 Artwork
Naturally he wanted a moon, sun, planets ... everything. It would have been easy to just buy something online but I thought lets make it instead. That way Bubu gets into a creative mode of problem solving by making things instead of just buying and adding to the future land fills. All the supplies are from our recycle bin and craft drawer.
Here is a blog-post, showing how we made our sun, moon, earth artwork.
#4 Visit to a planetarium
We are planning to go to a planetarium soon. Its on hold for the time being as we are avoiding crowded places due to the Caronavirus scare. That's for another blog-post, will update when we go to one.
During our journey, it was amazing to see how a child is like a sponge taking in all that you can give. Basically we all parents show them picture books and teach super basic stuff that society define's is appropriate for a child. These adventures in space with Bubu made me realize as a parent it is upto you. You decide the time you can spend to give any knowledge and also define the amount of the knowledge to be given to your child, aka you choose the right picture book for your child. Our little one's have all the grey matter needed to soak up the knowledge only difference is they come in a tiny package.
This blog-post and the activity's are inspired by this wonderful parenting class I started attending last September 2019. It's a virtual class. Visit www.wonderlives.org to know more. They have different mentors hosting different classes so you can decide the one that suits you the best.
The one I attend is called Genius babies Joyous parents (GBJP) and can be found here, http://www.wonderlives.org/gbjp-landing-page-2.php. This helps you understand your child and spend quality time actually imparting and being a catalyst in shaping some core intelligences at their best age. I highly recommend to check them out its totally worth it.
