Tiny Bubu clothes + having tons of them + accessories, can add a lot of mess and upkeep to life. Here's my way to organize a Bubu closet so it does not overwhelm me.
Housing all the pieces is important too. I have a system to organize the closet which has worked for the last 2 years and may keep working for the next 8 years or more.
We have a small closet in our spare bedroom which we use for Bubu's clothes. It's the same room we utilize as his playroom, see playroom-design-post here. I took it as a personal challenge to dress him up crisp + adorable, as the baby-boy-clothes-industry is so boring and stingy when it comes to boys-wear. I love to dress up myself; dressing him up since he was a baby is like an extension of the same passion. It gives fodder to my designer brain.
Now housing all the pieces is important too. I have a system to organize the closet ever since he was a baby. It has worked for the last 2 years and I see it working in the coming future too. Maybe even for the next 8 years or more.
This organization system helps to see all the pieces at once. It definitely helps to keep me time bound, I can get him ready head to toe in less than 10 mins. That is not just clothes but also matching accessories like hats, socks, tie, shoes, etc you name it. And I have never missed an outfit, always used everything before Bubu has outgrown it. We are renters so this is a great hack if you do not want to spend on closet systems. Good to mention here is, I am also a minimalist so I try to minimize on how much I buy and see that the accessories are multi-use. That being said, Bubu's closet does have a lot of categories. For example, his clothes can be categorized as home-wear, night-wear, school-wear and going-out-wear. It may sound as a lot of clothes but it's only a handful in each category keeping it a small collection, and it also means that the clothes look fresh, and less worn out.
First important and helpful item, is a wire rack. I got ours from Ikea.
And the second most important item/s is baskets. I got mine from Dollar Tree $1/each bucket or basket. I then added the ribbon (again from Dollar Tree), with a hot glue gun. You can elevate and customize the look depending on the baskets you get. I will love to change to wood or wicker to make it look more plush someday, hopefully soon. Each bin contains one category of clothes.
I use a dry erase marker to label the current baskets, and they wipe off easy which is great as the categories have changed throughout the 2 years. Labeling works great, so others know where to grab appropriate clothes from if you are not around.
After adding the baskets the rack still had loads of space in the back to accommodate other miscellaneous items. So I just got some slim oblong baskets to add at the back. This closet now literally house's all items needed for Bubu. It may be hard to tell, the following two photos show the difference between adding the back row baskets.
First rack
- Front row has 2 white buckets and 2 green oblong baskets.
(Right to left) 1) NightWear 2) Hats 3) Socks & Ties & Suspenders 4) Bibs
- Back row has 2 baskets with things that I want to be out of reach from Bubu.
1) Yellow basket with regular medicines. Zarbees, Saline spray, Gripe water, Tylenol and Motrin. We also have ayurvedic meds:- toothache powder, tummy and gas home-remedies.
2) Pink basket with thermometer, nose frida, nail grooming.
3) Green basket with all the grooming products to get ready in the morning. Lotion, hair brush, sunscreen.
Second rack
- Front row has 3 baskets with 3 to 4 pairs of schoolwear per basket.
- Back row has overstock wipes. I also keep a pack of diapers to use on daily basis. The remaining diaper box is in storage cupboard.
Third rack
- Front row has 2 white buckets and 2 green oblong baskets.
Right to left 1) Underwear & muslin washcloth 2)Homewear socks 3)Homewear clothes 4)Homewear clothes
- Back row has all the over stock skin care items like soaps, lotions, oils, bug bite spray toothpaste, toothbrush, hand sanitizers, etc.
The good part about baskets is, if you fancy, you can toss things in without folding and still it will look organised. I personally like to fold though as it helps me. Mostly I shop and get gifts in the form of sets (pant + tee/s). Folding clothes is helpful to find a set as they will end up folded together, as a pair tee + appropriate pant. To add to the benefits, matching set will always make your Bubu look put together not like you just threw random clothes together, coz you didn't have the bandwidth. Another thing I do that's helpful is, to stack the folded clothes-set like a hanging filing system where you can see all files. It allows me to see all the items when making a choice in the morning. And it's convenient to just pull out a set, grab a diaper, take the basket of skin care and you are ready in 10 mins.
If you want to know how I like to fold, here's a small demo.
- Fold the tee/shirts in half widthwise, with the hand tucked in.
- Fold the pant in half widthwise.
- Place single or if more, all tees one on top of the other inside the pant.
- Fold the extra bit of the pant over the tees, to make it equal length. It also helps secures the tees inside.
- Fold the set in half.
- Stack the sets like files, folded (neat) side facing up, so you can see all the options. Which side of the fold is seen also adds to make a closet look neat or messy.
Going back to the wire rack.
Below the rack
- I house all Bubu shoes
- Indian wear (mostly gifts) in a clothes organization bag. If I had a choice I would have preferred to have only one traditional outfit. I do not mind repeating instead of wearing it once and tossing.
Above the rack
- The jackets go on top of the rack.
- The topmost shelf has the Diaper bag, and all the lunch bags he has. Frankly you can make do with one but I adore the variety.
- On the other side I have hung all the outfits which are used especially when we go out. I know it looks like a lot, but it's actually just 4 shirts and 4 pants, 3 overalls and 4 shorts which we mix and match. Here also hangs his swimwear, Bubu owns 3 pairs only coz all were gifts.
I would love to see how you organize your Bubu's closet, to make life easy.
