Planning a weekly bump photoshoot! Learn through my mistakes & experience to make your growing-bump-photos a success.
Photo's is one of the best way to look back later at the fond memories of life.
I was really excited to be pregnant. I wanted to capture and document it all. Photo's is one of the best way to look back later at the fond memories of life. Here's the list of the other projects I did during my pregnancy. One such documentation was the weekly photos of the bump.
In this blogpost I am listing the things to consider for this shoot.
Concept
Where do you start? Best is have a project 'concept' in mind. If you can't think of an original one, there are tons of them floating around on the net, Pinterest.com is a good source. It could be holding the fruit representing the size of the baby, have the week written on a chalkboard or on your tummy or just store bought cards, etc.
My concept was inspired by a basic animation tool a 'flip book'. I have studied Industrial Design and Film and Animation was a part of my curriculum. This flip book would show the tummy growing as you flip through the pages.
It was perfect fit for a designer and this concept defines a part of my academic/professional foundation.
Outfit
Outfit is a very important part of any photoshoot. I know pregnancy looks like a tough time with nausea and morning sickness (wait till you have the baby and the sleepless nights ... pregnancy will look like cakewalk), but I will recommend to push yourself a little and dress up. Dolling up is a therapy in itself, you will feel refreshed and pampered and energetic once you are on the other side of it. Once you are ready and clicked your photos, go out or get a walk, flaunt the mommy-to-be-glow, make the most of your efforts.
You can pick a theme like color or type of attire, dress-up as per season, etc.
I brought this awesome dress on Victoria Secret. It can be worn a million ways, well that's definitely exaggerated but I can definitely wear it in 40 different ways. They have recently scaled down on apparel and stuck to their inner wear, so sharing a similar piece.

Location
Try to find a location that will be accessible, will motivate you to take the photo every week. My dress was sleeveless, my location was right next to my home but outdoor and the timeline of my pregnancy was mostly all of fall and winter! I know what you are thinking such a mismatch. I would feel so cold in the dress, I admit there were times I almost quit due to the weather, especially rains.
Pick a day
Choose a day to commit to every week for a click. Weekend is a good option.
I chose Friday evening, first of it was my first day of the week on friday's and it fit me and my partner well as we are mostly at home unwinding from our work week, mostly with no plans.
Photographer
Dependencies on anyone is a challenge. Its best to prop the camera on a stand and just click on timer or with your remote. My partner was lazy sometime too (same story winter weather). Pushing yourself then your partner that's a lot of work, try to find a alternative if partner gets lazy or busy or traveling :)
Be happy with your project!
Sometimes nature has its own plan! After all the concept, ideation, planning, time, efforts my belly did not show until it was 3rd trimester/7 months pregnant and when it showed it did not grow that much! So my flip book looked nothing dramatic like I had imagined. But on the positive side at least I have pics to look back at :)
Here are some pics from my photoshoot. Would love to see your pics in the comments!
