A minimalist list of baby stuff

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

This is a minimal list of all the stuff you will ever need for a Bubu. It goes from newborn baby through toddlerhood. My son is only two years & three months but I don't see needing anything until he is at least five.

List of the bare minimum.

I have always been a minimalist at heart. As a child I loved storybook illustration, that showed a mouse or a bunny house with just enough plates or clothes for the family. It really made me think can we live like this. Cut to life as an adult, I think I did achieve a decent minimalist living, it's not perfect but I am constantly trying.

The story had a twist, when I was pregnant a lot of friends suggested their must have items, I saw their homes laden with baby gear and products to accomodate a new baby, it gave me jitters. I wondered, is it necessary to look like “Babies-R-us” threw up in your home.

So here I am making a list of the bare minimum you will need. It goes into every little thing your baby will need, living life on a daily basis. Which means it’s still a lot of stuff but nonetheless it’s all essential stuff, and smaller and things that will be stored away in closets.

All these things we brought have been used to the fullest. Most of them are still being used. Bubu being two and a half years in November, I think it’s a very substantial and useful list for a first-time parent.

What you will not find in these lists are all the fluff. Like activity saucers, rocker, bouncer, etc. I have studied Industrial design (at IITB, India) and respect and read a lot on product design and how they ergonomically, sociologically, economically, ecologically impact the user. As a responsible designer I can vouch all those fluff products may feel nice to have but most of them are not even developmentally appropriate for the baby’s bones and body. So, research a lot before you buy fluff.

Coming back to the minimal list. As there are a lot of product’s I will be breaking them down into categories and writing separate blog posts on each. Click on the category you want to explore and see what I brought, why I feel it’s a good buy, how we used it earlier and how we use it now.

All product are going strong for the last two plus years and still counting. I hope this is helpful for all the new parents. Especially with the Black Friday/holiday sale hope you find something to add to your baby registry or your shopping/gift list for the holidays. And hope we all be little minimalist with baby products.
